The next eco-milestone in Tuppenny Barn’s future will grow our education, therapeutic and community work, as well has build resilience for our charity.
I am fully supportive of the planning application for the Shop and Community Café at Tuppenny Barn. For me, it is already a place which has a strong sense of community, under Maggie Haynes’ leadership, including outreach to vulnerable people, young carers and the homeless.
I am particularly supportive of engaging people with additional needs as part of the workforce, as this part of the population tragically lacks employment opportunities.

Our next eco-milestone in the development of Tuppenny Barn and the services it provides is the Transforming Tuppenny project which will deliver a new Shop and Community Café as well as a covered classroom, indoor study and training facility.
The zero-carbon building will provide the extra space, capacity and facilities we need to deliver all the programmes necessary to meet the increasing need from our community.
Who will benefit?
This transformation project will:
Increase the school visits we can accommodate by up to 20%
Increase and diversify the number of individuals who can benefit from our social and therapeutic horticulture groups
Offer work experience and accredited training for vulnerable or disadvantaged adults or young people.
Create jobs for 4 new employees and 12 new volunteers

A sustainable build
We are working closely with Grain, a bespoke, ethical architectural practice that specialises in the use of natural, low-carbon materials, to create another green build – our Education Centre with its straw bale walls, air-source heat pump and cedar tiled roof was the first. The new build will be created with different materials, some of which are cutting edge like the use of PV (photovoltaic) glass which converts light into energy for the external covered areas.

Key phases
After submitting a planning application in May 2022, we reached RIBA Stage Two. We then received full planning approval with permission to proceed with the build in December 2022, fulfilling RIBA Stage Three. In 2023 we commenced our fundraising appeal for the project and we are nearly half way there. It should be noted, that had it not been for Covid and the subsequent spiralling costs of building materials on a global basis, we would have had the building built and commissioned by now.
Our campaign target for Transforming Tuppenny is £674,000 which will be split into two areas: • A Corporate Fund of £600,000 for major funders (Trusts, Foundations and grant givers) • A Community Fund of £74,000 for community funders (local companies, councils, clubs and individuals).

Tuppenny Barn is a member of the Organic Growers Alliance which is a network of growers, farmers and horticulturalists. The OGA is a peer-to-peer support network run by growers for growers. As well, the OGA is a place to exchange information and learn and it represents its members.
