Our Story
In 2005 our founder, Maggie, bought a one-hectare green pasture field in Southbourne with the aim of creating a small beacon of sustainability locally, teaching children about growing organically and healthy eating.
Without any prior knowledge of how to grow fruit and vegetables, but with bags of ambition, positivity and grit, Maggie has overseen the growth of our Charity and Tuppenny Barn now comprises a team of nearly 100 staff and volunteers delivering inspirational education, gardening therapies and community support.

At the heart of Tuppenny Barn’s ethos is the promotion of sustainable living in all its forms and this underpins all that we do.
Our Mission
We’re on a mission to seed, support and share to achieve a sustainable future for all
Our activity is focussed on delivering three charitable objectives:
- Our first charitable objective
We are the only charity within a 50-mile radius offering both access to an outdoor classroom and eco-build Education Centre. Through these, we teach children about growing food and healthy eating, in order to foster physical and emotional wellbeing. Children also learn about all aspects of sustainability.
- Our second charitable objective
We deliver Social & Therapeutic Horticulture (STH) projects by qualified horticultural therapists to people of all ages to improve mental health and wellbeing. Our nature-based interventions provide proven positive benefits including a reduction in depression, anxiety and stress.
- Our third charitable objective
We are committed to our local community offer opportunities to participate in organised activities and volunteering on our one-hectare site and within our eco-build Education Centre. We collaborate with many local organisations and help the community when the need arises.

Last year, nearly 2,000 children benefited from a Sunflowers session for young carers, school visit, holiday workshop or pre-school activity at Tuppenny Barn.

Tuppenny Barn are proud to be Soil Association Organic
members campaigning for healthy, humane and sustainable
food, farming and land use.
Tuppenny Barn is a member of the Organic Growers Alliance which is a network of growers, farmers and horticulturalists. The OGA is a peer-to-peer support network run by growers for growers. As well, the OGA is a place to exchange information and learn and it represents its members.
