Meet some of our Sunflowers

There are over 800,00 young carers in the UK. Every week, we offer support to those in our community through our Sunflowers project

How we support young carers

With a focus on emotional wellbeing, ‘Sunflowers’, our young carers project, creates a space for children to think about and to focus on themselves. The programme gives them the opportunity to engage with horticulture, wildlife and cooking and to learn outdoors alongside their peers.

Tuppenny Barn offers the opportunity to our young carer students to take a break from their routine and experience the benefits of outdoor activities which include gardening, cooking and crafts .  The change in environment provides a wonderful boost to their well-being and mental health which is evident in the progress they make in boosting their confidence and self-esteem, social skills and also the opportunity to have some fun.   There are so many benefits to being outdoors in nature and gardening, from the sense of pride and achievement in planting seeds, nurturing plants and harvesting produce to cook with, to the reduction in stress levels which as we know is key to supporting positive mental health.   The Education team never cease to amaze me with their creative ideas that really captivate children and young people; their ability to impart knowledge in a fun, relaxed way is brilliant.

What happens during a typical session?

The sessions provide an opportunity for fun, experiential learning, away from their pressures and responsibilities at home. Each is delivered in our outdoor classroom and includes growing, cropping, cooking, art, writing, crafts and mindfulness activities. The programme gives them the opportunity to engage with horticulture, wildlife and cooking and to learn outdoors alongside their peers

“Fantastic local education centre for sustainable living. Lots of community events, school trips etc, using only organic produce. Well worth supporting as this centre plays a big part in the local community around Emsworth.”
